SHENZHEN, China — July 3, 2025 — BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer by units sold, has solidified its dominance in the global automotive industry with its Zhengzhou Megafactory, reportedly the largest EV production facility on Earth. Spanning 50 square miles, this highly automated, AI-powered plant produces a car every 60 seconds, showcasing China’s unmatched manufacturing prowess. The Zhengzhou facility, driven by cutting-edge robotics and a streamlined production process, has enabled BYD to scale production rapidly, contributing to its 2024 output of 4.27 million vehicles. The factory’s efficiency is bolstered by BYD’s vertical integration, producing most components in-house, and a flat leadership structure that accelerates decision-making. This agility has allowed BYD to outpace competitors like Tesla, with models like the Dolphin Surf (known as the Seagull in China) reaching a production milestone of one million units in just 27 months.
Despite recent reports of reduced shifts at some Chinese factories due to inventory buildup, BYD denies any significant slowdown, stating that its sales grew 39% in the first five months of 2025, with 1.76 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold globally. The company’s aggressive expansion includes new plants in Brazil and Hungary, aiming to localize production and capture markets in Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America.BYD’s rapid production and competitive pricing have sparked a global EV price war, challenging legacy automakers. However, concerns linger about excess inventory in China, with dealers holding 3.2 months of stock compared to the industry average of 1.38 months. As BYD continues to innovate, including megawatt charging technology that adds 250 miles of range in five minutes, its megafactory remains a cornerstone of China’s EV dominance, redefining the speed and scale of automotive manufacturing.
